MA Dissertation
The MA dissertation involves in-depth investigation of a topic related to the subject of Education and Human Rights. The dissertation may include empirical research or a synthetic essay based on extended literature review. In certain cases, it can include practicum. The dissertation is elaborated under the supervision of a tutor during the second year of studies, after successful student’s attendance of at least two mandatory modules and the elective modules prescribed in the first year of studies. The MA topic is selected in accordance with the student’s interests and is defined after communication with the supervisor.
The dissertation is elaborated in two stages: a. Research question, theoretical framework and design of the research method during the third semester of study, b. Completion during the fourth semester.
Frequent communication with the supervisor is important.
MA dissertation Seminar
The MA dissertation seminar aims at supporting students in the elaboration of their thesis. It takes place in three stages:
1st in October, when an open discussion among the students and the supervisors takes place
2nd in February, when the students present the dissertation’s research question, theoretical framework and research methodology
3rd in May, when the course of the dissertation completion (data, development, conclusions) is presented.
Student’s attendance in the seminar is essential and compulsory.
Length and Technical characteristics of the MA dissertation
The dissertation is written in Greek or English (after communication with the supervisor). Its length can be from 17.000 to 20.000 words without the appendices. It includes (mandatory) a summary in Greek and in English.
It should be typed in Arial or Calibri 12, line spacing 1,5, in A4 paging.
On the cover there should be: the logo of the MA, the student’s name, the supervisor’s name, the title and the academic year (an example is provided on this link). It is submitted in electronic form.

*A six months extension for the completion of the MA dissertation (till the end of February) can be given after a student’s application and the supervisor’s consent.
Applications for an extension of studies (strictly for the completion of the dissertation) are submitted in the last week of September, in accordance with the academic calendar. In the case of extension of studies, a special registration fee is required.
Examination of the MA dissertation
The dissertation is examined by a three-member examination committee appointed by the DECE Assembly. The examination committees comprise of MA tutors or DECE tutors, as well as academic staff of other Departments who teach at postgraduate level in relevant subjects.
The students present their dissertation orally to the committee and respond to questions and/or comments.
If the content of the MA dissertation is not satisfactory the committee may:
- require additions or corrections and re-submission at a date determined by the committee
- fail the dissertation. In that case the student is dismissed from the Programme
