Research Ethics
Research is a basic mission of the University; it is a public good, essential for advancement of scientific knowledge. Academic freedom and respect of intellectual property rights are basic principles for research conducted in the MA “Education and Human Rights”, as in any other academic institution.
Any research activity conducted under the auspices of the MA “Education & Human Rights” (research by academic and research staff, employees or students) must comply with the “Code on Ethics and Good Practice” of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) (https://www.uoa.gr/anakoinoseis_kai_ekdiloseis/proboli_anakoinosis/kodikas_deontologias_kai_kalis_praktikis_ekpa/). Research that involves minors must fully comply with the NKUA specific guidelines on ethics regarding research with children. In the case of research that is conducted in schools the specific guidelines regarding research in educational settings must be respected (Κώδικας Δεοντολογίας για την έρευνα σε εκπαιδευτικό πλαίσιο).
Research conducted under the auspices of the MA “Education & Human Rights” must in all cases:
- respect the value of any human being,
- abstain from social, cultural and gender discrimination or discrimination related to corporeal characteristics or sexual orientation,
- respect private life and personal data,
- respect all living creatures, as well as the natural and cultural environment.
Procedure regarding compliance with research ethics in DECE
The Committee on Ethics and Good Practice (CEGP) of the NKUA is responsible for the observance of the “Code on Ethics and Good Practice” in any research that is conducted at the NKUA (funded research, doctoral thesis, dissertation etc.). In order to ensure compliance with the provisions of the NKUA Code on Ethics the scientific coordinator of any research project should submit a documented application to the CEGP, following the specified regulations (Κανονισμό Λειτουργίας).
