Training in Foster Care: The experience of foster carers from the educational process.
The training of foster carers became mandatory in Greece very recently in 2018, just after the Law 4538/2018 was voted, as a result there is no relevant research to date with regards to the effectiveness of the training and the ways it is being implemented. Contrary to the Greek case, the training of foster carers has been a reality for many decades in many countries of the western world. In the first part of this thesis, the importance of training in foster care is highlighted through the presentation of training programs abroad and also through the presentation of the findings discovered by evaluating these programs. Furthermore, a brief comparative evaluation of these programs it is also attempted, in order to highlight both the advantages and disadvantages of the different educational approaches that are being followed. Subsequently, in the second part the findings from the answers of 12 foster carers who received training in Greece that participated in the qualitative research which was carried out during this thesis, are being analyzed and presented. The purpose of this research is to show the experience of Greek foster carers from the educational process, to investigate whether and to what extent their needs are met by the education provided, but also to formulate proposals from the carers themselves for the future of trainings. In the last part of this thesis, by evaluating the relevant answers, it is being highlighted that foster carers need more profound and substantial communication and support from the professionals, as well as the creation of stronger communication networks between foster carers. Furthermore, it is pointed out that they need more than one training with more specialized content. In addition, it is established that the requests of foster carers in Greece are similar to those that have emerged from corresponding surveys abroad and therefore some concerns are raised about the operation and implementation of the training of foster carers in Greece. Finally, the limitations of this research are being presented as well as suggestions for future research related to the subject of foster carers training are highlighted.
